About Us
About the Society of Ashdown Golfers
We’re proud to be a warm and welcoming club where camaraderie and competition go hand in hand. With around 250 members, our club strikes the perfect balance—large enough to make every competition engaging, yet small enough to ensure prime tee times are easily accessible throughout the year. Whether you’re here for the social scene, competitive play, or simply the love of the game, you’ll find a home with the Ashdown Golfers.
Our club has a rich and evolving history. Our home course (the West Course at Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club) was originally founded in 1889 as the Ashdown Forest & Tunbridge Wells Ladies Golf Club. The course expanded to a full 18 holes in 1932 and hosted the English Ladies Amateur Championship the same year and the Ladies Club was also granted Royal Status in their own right. The Ashdown Golfers formed in 1985 and were based at the West Courses neighbouring Ashdown Hotel until its closure in 2001. In 2004 the West Course clubhouse extension was completed (adjoining to the Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club) and has continued to be our home since.
Our club is managed by a dedicated volunteer Committee, elected annually at our AGM. The administration and operation of our club is also supported by the office team of the Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club.
As proud affiliates of England Golf, all our members benefit from holding a World Handicap System (WHS) Handicap Index and are covered by the third-party insurance that forms part of this affiliation. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or just starting out, our club offers a vibrant and supportive environment to enjoy the game.

The Uk’s Number 1 Course in its Category!
The September 2013 edition of Golf World magazine declared Royal Ashdown Forest’s West Course the number one UK golf destination in its ‘Short but Sweet’ list featuring the country’s top courses under 6,000 yards.
